Peggy and Drew, both aspiring writers, move to an isolated canal boat with their fourteen-year-old son. Peggy is the glue that holds their family together, even as their son is bullied relentlessly for his physique and his family’s lack of money. But when Drew becomes frustrated by his wife’s sudden writing success, he moves their boat further and further from civilization.
With their increasing isolation, personal challenges become harder to ignore, even as they desperately try to break toxic generational patterns. But when Drew’s gaslighting becomes too much for Peggy to take, it sets off a catastrophic series of events.
With Will Dean’s signature “well-drawn characters and excellent prose” (Sarah Pearse, New York Times bestselling author), Adrift is gripping exploration of the ties that bind when everything spirals out of control.
I own book 1 of this series (The Silent Watcher), thanks to Amazon First Reads. I had No-Rush Rewards that were going to expire in the middle of the month, so I got myself book 2 of the series. I have not read a bad Victor Methos book and I am excited to get into this series next year.

My daughter was in the game section of the library looking at some D&D books, and that section is right next to the sports section. Growing up I played soccer, and it was literally my entire world until I became pregnant with my son. This book stood out to me on the shelf and on a whim I borrowed it. As of the writing up of this post I have yet to read it.
This was my First Reads choice for the month of July.
I borrowed this one through Prime Reading. It’s a short story that just needed to be a little bit longer to be a really good book!
I requested Forget Me Not mostly because Karissa Vacker is the narrator but Stacy Willingham is a great author, and High Season for the plot.
The premise of this book intrigued me and I ended up requesting it through NetGalley, something I’ve been doing less. The Bone Queen publishes early in 2026.
I read the rest of the NYPD Red series, so when I saw this cover on Edelweiss I requested it, without really reading the synopsis. I was approved rather quickly, which is a shock to me. This book publishes in November of this year.

Aleaha Reneé from Simon & Schuster sent me a message through Edelweiss with a widget for The Safari by Jaclyn Goldis. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was going to accept it or not, but just decided to download it yesterday.
Anna at Macmillan Audio sent me a complimentary audiobook of Alex North’s new book, The Man Made of Smoke.
Storygraph says, “This book is ideal for readers who enjoy psychological thrillers exploring familial trauma and the lingering grip of past horrors, wrapped in a tense small-town mystery with emotional depth.”
This one publishes next week, so I need to get to listening!
Is this book on your TBR? Have you read any other Alex North books?
I am an Amazon Prime member, so every month I can choose a First Reads book. I decided to go with the bonus short story for the month of May as the other books on the list did not appeal to me.
Are you a Prime member? Which book did you choose?
